Junior Jottings Number 8 2013

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It's amazing how the year is flying and that we are already half way through this term. We hope that the weather will stabilize so the children can take part in the activities that we have planned that use the outdoors.

Dog Safety
We recently had Jane visit us with her dog Amber as part of a safety programme run by Hutt City Animal Services. The programme is called KIDS (Kids Involved in Dog Safety.) Your child should have brought home a booklet covering the messages that were taught in the education session. The children are very good at remembering the associated rhymes that will help to keep them safe around both familiar and unfamiliar dogs. The children have been role playing different scenarios. I encourage you to also reinforce the messages at home as well.

Road Safety
This week we have Constable Julie returning to our school but this time she will be focusing the children on keeping safe on and around roads, safe walking on footpaths, crossing roads, riding in vehicles both cars and buses and also safely using bicycles. Each day she will cover a different aspect, which we will be following up in the classroom. Parents can also reinforce the road rules at home with your children to ensure that they know how to keep themselves in and around traffic.

Sun Safety
The Junior School children is also focussing on how to keep safe in the sun. They have been learning all about "Undercover Cody." This character features with his friends and ways to keep sunsmart. The children also have been using the app on the Ipad about this.
Remember to be Sunsmart you need to -

Slip on a shirt
Slip into some shade
Slop on 30+ sunscreen
Slap on a hat
Wrap on some sunglasses

If your child is bringing sunscreen to school please make sure that it is named and in their schoolbags and that the sunscreen has been applied in the morning before school.

Athletics
The children have been learning some skills in athletics, with practices occurring whenever the weather permits. Can you please make sure that your child wears suitable shoes each day to school so that they can participate in the activities? Please do not send them in jandals and crocs as these types of footwear makes taking part in running type activities very frustrating for the children.

Events coming up
On Monday November 25th an artist is coming to the Junior School to show some techniques and get them to create an artwork.

On Wednesday November 27th there will be a 'Starting school at five' information evening for parents of preschoolers in room 3 at 7 p.m.
