Junior Jottings Number 7

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The time is flying by with the last week of the term already here and daylight saving just around the corner. The children have certainly been busy with their learning throughout the term, not just in the curriculum areas of reading, writing, mathematics and inquiry but also in a wealth of other experiences including the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme, 100 days at school activities, the Jump rope for Heart and Cricket skills programmes, Performing arts programme, audiences for the Musical Stars and Wearable Arts performances to name but a few. You can see many of these on the classroom blogs.

Welcome and Farewell
A very warm welcome is extended to those children and their families who have recently joined our Junior School. We hope you are settling in and meeting lots of our other families.

We welcome Mrs Elizabeth Sullivan into a full time position in room 16 teaching the New Entrants until the end of the year and to Ms Kate Salisbury who has been doing a marvelous job teaching room 3 on Thursdays and Fridays in her place.

This week we say farewell and best wishes to Mrs Mikaela Cody and Mrs Rebecca Saker who are leaving to have their babies. We thank them for all the fabulous work that they have done and wish them well in their next journey. They will be returning to teach again in our Muritai Junior School in the future.

We also say a big thank you and farewell to our two wonderful student teachers, Ms Emma Skillington and Miss Aimee Harstonge, who have been fantastic in rooms 2 and 3 over the past seven weeks. They will do well in their future teaching careers.

Next term we welcome three teachers to our Junior School - Mrs Karen Houghton who will be teaching room 4, Mr Hayden Ray who will be teaching Room 5 and Mrs Annabel Smith who will be teaching room 3 on Thursdays and Fridays. Mr Ray and Mrs Smith have both taught at Muritai School before.

A huge Thank you
We are indebted to the adults who have come week after week to do the 'Hooked on Books' programme with some of our children. Your invaluable support has certainly helped each of the children involved to make wonderful progress in their reading and foster their love of books. We have really appreciated the time you have given up and I know that you can see the difference that it has made.

This week
Thank you to all those people who have made sent along donations for the 'Jump rope' and 'Spellathon.' Some of the 'Spellathon' money will be going towards the purchase of new reading books in our Junior School. We are delighted as each reading book costs at least $10 per copy to purchase. If you still have donations to be handed in please do so this week. If you have misplaced the 'Jump rope' envelope or 'Spellathon' folder, don't worry just send along your donation in a plain envelope.

If you have any more Yummy Apple Stickers please send them in this week too so that we can count them, and send them away in exchange for Physical Education equipment.

The last day for the Hotdogs, organised by the Home and School committee will be on Wednesday. Thank you to all the adults who have given up their time to cook and serve the hotdogs this year. The children have enjoyed having something warm to eat for lunch in the cooler weather.

Our Full School Assembly will be held this Thursday 26 September at 1.35 p.m. in the hall not on the usual Friday. Adults and families are very welcome to join us. Please sit on the chairs in front of the kitchen at the back of the hall as chairs along the walls are for teaching staff to supervise their classes. During assembly, our Junior School will be singing and doing the actions of a song entitled 'I am awesome' that they learnt during the 'Keeping Ourselves Safe' programme with Constable Julie.

Over the holidays there is always plenty for the children to do. We hope that they get a chance to have a well earned rest but if they have some time to spare they can keep practising their learning by doing some of the following - talking about their experiences, writing with felt pens, in the sand or on whiteboards or keep a diary, re-read their words on their reading rockets, visit the library and read books or join in with their holiday programme activities, do some handwriting, or spelling from their rockets especially the levels that they have already mastered and mathematics with counting forwards and backwards, recognising numbers and basic facts. They could also be outside practising their physical skills like catching and throwing balls, swimming, riding bikes and scooters and using the equipment in different playgrounds.

Slippers will be coming home and next term the children need to wear named sunhats. The sunhat needs to be the 'bucket' style, which goes over the child's ears, covers their neck and comes down to shade their eyes. They are not allowed to wear caps. Please ensure that your child brings their sunhat to school with them on the first day of the term.

School finishes this Friday September 27th at the usual time and we begin Term 4 with Jumpjam on Monday October 14th at 8.40 a.m. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday break with your family. We look forward to seeing the children all back, well rested, ready for another term of varied learning experiences.

Kind regards
