March 2015

It is amazing that it is already March. Welcome to the first Junior Jottings newsletter with items pertaining to our Junior School. You received the term overview earlier and this can be found on the school website www.muritai.school.nz under the drop down menu 'our learning' with the other blogs - it's entitled 'Junior Syndicate.'

The year has started well and it is pleasing to see the children have settled so quickly into their learning. Lessons with the Swimsafe instructors made a huge difference to the confidence of the children. Their swimming progress was remarkable. Each class will continue to use the pool twice per week while it is still open.

The 'Bike to school day' was also a tremendous success with so many children riding their scooters and bikes on one day.

Room 1 has been hosting some of the preschool children from both Barnados Early Learning Centre and East Harbour Kindergarten with another visit planned for this week.

By the beginning of this week, all children will have received their login and passwords for Mathletics and then they can start doing a minimum of five minutes practice each night. If you have not got your child's details please contact your child's teacher or if there are any other issues please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you to those parents and caregivers who have subscribed to Reading eggs. Login and password details will come home tomorrow (Monday.) My apologies for a glitch which meant you did not get them on Friday as planned.

Just a reminder that school starts at 8.40 a.m. each day and finishes at 2.55 p.m.  A bell goes at 8.40 a.m. and that is to signal all students that they need to be in their class ready to start their day. They should have arrived at around 8.30 a.m. so that they can get their bookbags, drinks etc out ready for the day and then have a chance to catch up with their friends. On Tuesday mornings, we have a staff meeting so although we may not be in the classroom when your child arrives on that day, they can still do their usual morning routine. At the end of the day, the Year 1 children are handed over to their parents and caregivers while the Year 2 children are released into the Junior School courtyard to meet their parents and caregivers. If your child is going to be absent from school please telephone the school office on 562 8409 and leave a message as this saves Jo and Carole a lot of time chasing up on the whereabouts of children.

Seaweek

This week is 'Seaweek' and the theme for this year is 'Beneath the Surface.' On Monday afternoon, weather permitting, all the children from the Junior School will be visiting our local beach. If it is wet or cold we will go on Thursday afternoon. The students will be investigating an area of the beach and using magnifying glasses to examine the area more closely. They have been learning to use a magnifying glass correctly. We will also be lucky to have a 'touch tank' come to school on Tuesday. Thanks to Mrs Algar for organising this opportunity for us all.

Playdates
We encourage children to widen their friendships by having playdates but we are also trying to get them to plan these at least a day ahead instead of them demanding to play with someone straight after school. Having to say no can be embarrassing for parents, especially if they already have something organised for that day.

School photos
Last week you will have received a notice about school photos. If you would like to make an order please return the envelope and payment to the school office or your child's teacher. The photos will be taken in the school hall over the process of a week and you will be informed which day your child's class will have their photographs taken.

Junior School Swimming Festival
This event will be held on Tuesday March 10th at the Eastbourne Pool. We will be starting at 9.45 a.m. with the children from Room 6. They will be followed by Room 5 at 10.15 a.m. Room 4 at 10.45 a.m. and Room 1 at 11.15 a.m. Every child will be doing the same four events in the small pool, regardless of their swimming ability, with the emphasis being on being confident and having fun in the water. We will not be having timed races like the older children do although we do have many Junior children able to swim competently in the large pool. Parents and caregivers are very welcome to join us during the morning but please stand back from the poolside and keep a firm watch on any preschoolers. The pool with the seal will be unavailable for any child during the events. Please note that the starting times are approximate so please ensure you are early so that you do not miss your child's event.

Visits to Pataka Museum
The Year 1 children will be going on Monday March 9th and the Year 2 children will be going on Wednesday March 18th. All children will be going by bus and as the buses are leaving at 9 a.m. on these days please ensure that your child is not late to school. Your child needs to bring morning tea, lunch, drink bottle, sun hat and wear suitable clothing and footwear. They will be involved in a range of hands on experiences that will be teaching them how the daily life of children and families has changed over time. e.g. they will be shown how to use a slate and that now they have felt pens and exercise books and ipads to use.

The Festival of the Arts
All children in the Junior School will be going by bus (provided free of charge) to be the audience for three shows. They will be leaving at 9 a.m. and returning by home time. Please ensure your child has morning tea, lunch, drink bottle, sun hat and suitable clothing and footwear as they will be walking through some of the streets in Wellington to get from one show to the next.

Starting School at Five Information Evening
This evening will be at 7 p.m. in room 3 and will be an opportunity for parents and caregivers who have preschool children to come along and find out what their child will be involved in at school when they turn five and have any questions answered.

'Grandparents and Grandfriends' Afternoon
This event will be held at school in the hall from 1.30 p.m on Wednesday April 1st. Your child will be bringing home a notice in their bookbags about this tomorrow.

Cross Country
When swimming finishes, the students will be involved in running activities in preparation for our annual school Cross Country. This year it will be on Tuesday March 31st during the morning with more details to follow closer to the time.

Parent Conferences
There will be parent and teacher conferences on March 23 and 24th so please make a note of this in your diaries. More details for these will come shortly.

If you have any questions about your child's learning, have any concerns or anything else to do with the Junior School please do not hesitate to contact me.

I do hope you all spent a lovely day with your children today celebrating 'Children's Day.'

Yours in partnership
Maureen Buckley
Deputy Principal
