Junior Jottings - April

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

PARENT AND TEACHER CONFERENCES
The Year 1 and 2 conferences will be held on Monday May 12th and Tuesday May 13th. This is in Term 2 week 2. Online bookings for these will be open straight after the holidays. Years 3 to 8 will be having parent conferences next week on Tuesday and Thursday. I apologize for any confusion that this may have caused. Please note that the whole school will be closing at the earlier time of 2.15 p.m. next Tuesday April 8th and Thursday April 10th so please make arrangements to collect your child at this time on those days.

WELCOME BACK AND THANK YOU
On Monday April 7th, Mrs Mikaela Cody will be back teaching in room 4. On Monday morning, the children who have been taught in Room 1 by Mrs Ryan this term will go straight to Room 4. I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Mrs Ryan for the fantastic job she has done. The students have been very lucky. Please note - Mrs Ryan and Mrs Cody will be doing the Room 4 parent conferences together.

ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT
Shhh – please don’t tell the children but we have an annual Easter egg hunt around the playground at school. The children design egg shapes, which are collected by Easter Bunny and hidden. They then have fun searching the playground for theirs. Once they find it, they redeem it for a small chocolate egg from Easter Bunny. If your child is not allowed to have chocolate, is allergic or you do not want them to take part please can you let me know by email by next Friday April 11th so alternative arrangements can be made?

CROSS COUNTRY RUN
Our annual Cross Country event will be held on Tuesday April 15th if fine. The Year 1 and 2 children will be leaving school at 9 a.m. to walk down to the recreation ground. The Year 1 children will be warming up first and then they will have their event. They will then cool down and the Year 2 children will warm up then do their event and cool down. All children will then return to school.
Your child needs to wear suitable shoes for running and bring along a warm sweatshirt to put on and also their drink bottle containing water. You are very welcome to come along and watch the events.  I am, however, unable to give you a precise start time for each of the events.

ASSEMBLIES
Room 2 will be hosting Junior School Assembly in the library on Friday and the Year 2 children will be singing at the Full School Assembly in the hall next Friday April 11th at 1.30 p.m.2014. Parents are very welcome to attend.

BLOGS
Thank you to those parents who have posted comments to our classroom blogs. The children love to read these. If you need instructions on how to do this please let me know.

MATHLETICS AND READING EGGS
All children are subscribed to Mathletics. If you have any problems with this can you please let me know? Those parents who subscribed to Reading eggs for their child should have got their details of passwords etc. If you have not or would like to subscribe or have any problems can you please email me?

HOLIDAYS
Some families who wish to take their children for holidays within term time need to apply in writing for permission to Mr. Bird (an email is fine) and also let your child’s teacher know. We need to account for the attendance of every child. If you are going away, please do not ask teachers to supply work for your child to do. Here are some suggestions that you can do instead.
1.     You can purchase a book and felt pens etc for them to write a diary or draw pictures or glue mementos of their trip in.
2.     In the book, you could write in some basic facts equations and/or spelling words for them to practice.
3.     You could purchase some books for them to read or you to read to them.
4.     They can do Mathletics and Reading eggs and other educational apps on your Ipads and laptops.
5.     You could orally practice counting forwards and backwards, skip counting in twos, fives and tens, recalling the number before and after a number, read numbers all around them.
6.     You could send us photos/video clips by email and we can share them with the class on the screen.

School finishes for the holidays at the usual time of 2.55 p.m. on Thursday April 17th and your child will be bringing home their sunhat. School will start again for Term 2 on Monday May 5th at 8.40 a.m. and your child will need to have slippers with them to wear inside the classroom.

If you have any questions about the Junior School or your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to ask your child’s teacher or myself. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning. They have made great progress this term and need to have a well- earned rest. We have planned some exciting learning experiences for them for next term. Please make an opportunity to discuss ANZAC day with your child.
Best wishes for a relaxing holiday break.

Kind regards

Maureen Buckley
