Junior Jottings Number 2 2012

Dear Parents and Caregivers

What a busy few weeks we have had. A special thank you to the students in rooms 1 and 6 who have been our hosts for our Junior School Assembly. They have done a fantastic job and we loved seeing their beautiful work. Thank you to those parents who also joined us. Our next Junior Assembly will be on Friday March 9th at 1.40 p.m. in the hall.

Junior School Butterfly Garden
I hope you have all had a chance to see the progress being made with our beautiful butterfly gardens. Six children accompanied Mrs Ryan and Mrs Heath to the plant shop to purchase plants for our gardens. Before the shopping trip, the children throughout the Junior School researched the plants butterflies like. They have also been watching the whole butterfly life cycle occur and have been very excited to observe first-hand the whole process. They have seen the butterflies lay eggs, the eggs hatch, the caterpillars grow, the pupae stage occur and finally butterflies hatching out to enjoy the flowers in their gardens. Each child has also planted their own seed and these will come home at a later date to be planted in their garden at home.

Junior School Swimming Festival
The children are all looking forward to next Wednesday March 7th when we will hold our Junior School Swimming Festival at our local Eastbourne Pool. We will be having Year 1 children (rooms 2, 3 and 1 i that order) start first at 10.30 a.m. The children will do a series of fun activities in, on and under the water, all in the small pool with the emphasis being on water confidence and fun.

The Year 2 classes will join us later on at 11.30 a.m. and will begin their events in the big pool. When the Year 1 children have finished their events they will get dressed and go and join their House group on the grass area beside the big pool. Once1 has finished some of the Year 2 children will then do their events in the small pool. Parents and families are very welcome to join us. Please stand back from the pool edge so that every adult gets an opportunity to see their child taking part. Years 3 and 4 children will be at the pool having their swimming sports first so there will be a lot of people in the pool area. If the weather is poor we will not be having a postponement date as the pool is closing on the weekend and is booked out for the rest of the week.

On Wednesday your child needs to bring their swimming gear, morning tea, lunch, water, sunhat, and warm clothing to put on after their events. The children can dress up in their House colours as well. If it is fine and sunny we will have lunch at the park next door to the pool. We hope you can join us to support your child's efforts.

School Photos
The Junior School will be having their photos taken by Sue Allman at school in the hall on Wednesday March 14th. Room 1 will only have individual or sibling photos as this stage and will have a class photo later in the year.

Starting School at Five Information Evening
This term we will have this evening on Wednesday March at 7 p.m. in the school staffroom. If you or someone you know has a preschooler and would like to come along and find out about our school could you please let them know?

Children turning five in 2012
If you or a child you know is turning five this year and may be coming to our school could you please phone our school office on 562 8409 or email me at buckley@muritai.school.nz with the following details - the child's name, date of birth, parent or caregiver name and phone numbers. We need to ensure your child is on our list and this information also helps us to plan for staffing.

Mathletics
You should have received your child's username and password this week so that they can sign in to the Mathletics site. The children have been shown different areas of the site at school so for the next two weeks we would like them to explore the site with you so that they become familiar with what they need to do.

Strike
Yesterday all students around the school watched the performance of 'Strike' in our hall. They were amazing musicians and played an array of percussion instruments. The cost was $4 and has come from your child's activity fee. Some students in year 8 have made a movie of parts of the concert so if you would like to see this go to 'Muritai TV.'

Adult help in classrooms
If you are interested in listening to children in our Junior classes read, could you please let me know?
